SUMMARY:NYSERDA Regional Synthesis Workgroup Stakeholder Workshop
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a meeting on September 28\, 2022 (11 am – 12:30 pm EDT) to discuss a draft database of research priorities focused on the environmental effects of offshore wind development in the U.S. Atlantic. This database of research needs and data gaps was compiled from existing sources and synthesizes data gaps and research needs identified across prioritization efforts\, such that potential researchers and funders can easily access\, sort\, and further prioritize research needs. The database is intended to (1) inform immediate decisions (e.g.\, in the next 6-9 months) about the focus of regional funding for research and monitoring\, and (2) be used as a resource in the development of detailed science and monitoring plans by a range of entities. \n\n\n\nThe database was developed by the regional synthesis workgroup of the Offshore Wind Environmental Technical Working Group (E-TWG) with technical support from the Biodiversity Research Institute and the U.S. Offshore Wind Synthesis of Environmental Effects Research (SEER) team at NREL and PNNL. The regional synthesis workgroup is hosting an open Zoom meeting on September 28th to present the database development process and a beta version of the database for stakeholder input\, with a public feedback period to follow. The meeting will be professionally facilitated by the Consensus Building Institute with additional support from the Cadmus Group.

SUMMARY:BOEM Office of Renewable Energy Programs Lunch-and-Learn Webinar: Compensatory Mitigation for the Marine Environment
DESCRIPTION:The Endangered Species Act\, Marine Mammal Protection Act\, National Environmental Policy Act\, and Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act are a few of the statutes that analyze impacts associated with offshore wind development in the Outer Continental Shelf. Each of these statutes and associated regulations may require mitigation\, monitoring\, and reporting conditions to avoid\, minimize\, or compensate for negative impacts on natural resources. For projects with unavoidable impacts\, compensatory mitigation can provide conservation benefit to protected resources. \n\n\n\nThis webinar will provide a summary of how compensatory mitigation for unavoidable impacts is currently being implemented across the United States for natural resources such as federally protected species and their habitats. However\, most of these mitigation standards have been developed for terrestrial habitats\, and if implemented\, expectations will likely need to be adapted for marine species and habitats. Mitigation solutions for marine compensatory mitigation need to be identified to provide the offshore renewable energy industry and regulators the information necessary for informed decision making. \n\n\n\nIn our webinar\, we will provide some examples of past compensatory mitigation projects that provide insight into how compensatory mitigation requirements for impacts to marine species can be met. We will leave ample time at the end of our webinar to respond to questions and have discussions about how to move forward with meeting the demand for marine compensatory mitigation.
